|Post subject:||Old Gas|
I just inherited a 2015 BMW i8 from my uncle who passed away 13 months ago. The car is located in Vermont now and I am in New York. The car has 500 miles on it and hasn't been driven in 18 months. I'm wondering if I should get in and drive it home or have it brought to a dealer first to have the fuel system drained and fresh gas put in first, due to old gas. If it will run & drive, will it potentially do damage to the fuel system if I drive with old gas? My first thought is to syphon the old gas out and fill with fresh gas, but I don't know if a syphon hose can be pushed all the way into the tank. Does anyone know if there is a clear path through the filler tube to the tank so I can get a hose all the way in?

For a car as expensive as this, towing and paying someone to drain the tank doesn't seem so bad.
However, there are other options that I've used on older/cheaper vehicles in the past.
1. Buy a fuel additive/stabilizer. This is supposed to be added before the fuel sits, but I seem to remember one saying it could be added to old gas.
2. Siphon what you can, then fill the tank right up with fresh fuel
With either method, rock the car a bit to ensure good mixture
What did the BMW dealership recommend? In theory, a plug-in hybrid would/could typically live a long time without using any fuel...
